richard-cizikRichard Cizik has resigned as vice president for governmental affairs of the National Association of Evangelicals after telling National Public Radio that he is shifting his views on same-sex unions. Most of what he said in that interview, on “Fresh Air,” had to do with the environment.

But he also told host Terry Gross that he’s not opposed to permitting civil unions (though not marriage) for gay couples; that he would support Barack Obama, who favors a woman’s right to an abortion, in efforts to reduce the number of abortions; and that he thinks the government ought to distribute contraceptives to people who want them.

None of this sat well with conservative evangelicals.

An interview that Christianity Today had with Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, suggests that Cizik’s resignation wasn’t entirely voluntary.
