USC Sprinter Shot at Halloween Party

bryshon-nellum.jpegA University of Southern California sprinter was recovering Saturday after being shot in the leg three times after leaving a Halloween party.

Bryshon Nellum, 19, was hospitalized in stable condition following the shooting at 2 a.m. Friday, police Officer Sam Park said.

Nellum had attended a party at a restaurant near campus and was leaving when he was attacked.

him and yelled some sort of gang-affiliated name and shot him,” Park

Nellum was shot three times in the left thigh and hamstring.

No arrests had been made by Saturday and it was unclear whether Nellum knew his attackers, Park said.

had successful surgery Friday night and doctors hope he will be able to
resume his track career, USC track coach Ron Allice told the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

A call to Allice from The Associated Press was not immediately returned Saturday.

Nellum was considered a potential Olympian when he graduated in 2007 from Long Beach Poly High School.

was the nation’s top sprinter in the 200- and 400-meter races in 2007
and the first athlete to win California state titles two straight years
in both races.
