Jennifer Hudson’s nephew was found shot to death inside a sport-utility
vehicle on the West Side.

It was not immediately known whether the gun was used in the
killings of Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew.  Earlier today, police
sent about 100 personnel to the area near 13th Street and Kolin Avenue
to search for evidence.  The handgun was found around 1:30 p.m. about a
block from where the vehicle had been parked along the street.

All three victims were shot to death. Her 7-year-old nephew, Julian
King, was shot twice in the head with a .45-caliber weapon, the same
caliber used in the murders of his uncle and grandmother, law
enforcement sources said.

Officers blocked off the alley after the discovery and a forensic services team was sent to recover the weapon.

Police declined to say whether the gun was a .45-caliber. The
weapon is being taken to the Illinois State Police crime lab for
forensic testing, said Nick Roti, deputy chief of patrol for the
Harrison Area.

Roti said a few other “small bits of evidence” were recovered in the thick shrubbery where the gun was found in a vacant lot.

“People have to be interviewed and we can’t give out details,” Roti said.

Police call William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson’s
sister, Julia, a person of interest in the murders of Hudson’s mother,
brother and nephew.

Meanwhile, a friend of Jennifer Hudson’s family contacted Bears
defensive tackle Tommie Harris to see if Harris would donate a jersey
to help pay tribute to one of the victims of the South Side tragedy.

Harris, who has been friends with Jennifer Hudson for a couple of
years, received a phone call asking him for a jersey to honor Hudson’s
brother, Jason. Jason Hudson and his mother, Darnell Donerson, were
found shot to death last Friday inside their South Side home days
before police found Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew.

The jersey requested of Harris was intended to be part of a memorial for Jason.

“I would like to give them a personal jersey,” Harris said after
practice today. “A lot of times, you try to understand things but you
can’t fathom that, losing three loved ones within three days. It’s very
difficult, and my prayers are with the family. It’s hard, but you just
have to try not to lose faith in God.”
