Rick Warren Asks for Prayer for Daughter-in-Law Undergoing Brain Surgery
Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church, one of the country’s most influential pastors, has called upon his congregation to pray for the recovery of his daughter-in-law from multiple brain surgeries.
Warren’s daughter-in-law Jaime Warren is pulling through following a harrowing week of emergency surgeries for a life-threatening brain tumor, church officials said today.
Jaime, the 25-year-old wife of Warren’s son, Josh, is “alive and well,” said Anne Krumm, personal assistant to Warren, and of the nation’s highest-profile evangelical pastors whose Lake Forest ministry has more than 20,000 followers.
“She is progressing as well as can be expected at this point,” Krumm said today.
Rick Warren, in an e-mail sent to Saddleback Church members Friday thanking them for their prayers and support, provided in it a daily, at times hourly account of the dramatic swings his daughter-in-law weathered after first being hospitalized Oct. 11 “for blurred vision, instability, and headaches.”
A CAT scan revealed a massive tumor at the base of her brain, wrote Warren, who declined to be interviewed for this story.
Ironically, an emergency Caesarian section Jaime Warren underwent two months ago may have saved her life, Rick Warren wrote.
Jaime Warren went into labor five weeks early in late August for the birth of a son, Cole. An emergency C-section was ordered because his heart rate began to drop. Cole was not breathing when he was born but doctors resuscitated him.
“We now know (the emergency C-section) likely saved her life,” Rick Warren wrote in an email addressed “Dear Saddleback Family” and sent out Friday. “She could have died pushing in a normal delivery.”
Jaime Warren underwent 20 hours of surgery for her brain tumor Wednesday and Thursday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center after an MRI revealed a “very serious and complex vascular tumor and hydrocephalus,” Warren wrote.
The chief of neurosurgery handled her case “because of its risk and complexity,” Warren wrote.
Just hours after the surgery, Jaime Warren’s condition worsened as she experienced internal bleeding and pressure on her brain, Rick Warren wrote.
Doctors rushed her into surgery again to successfully stop the bleeding, but warned the family of “possible long-term damage,” Warren wrote.
A Bible verse following his entry about the second surgery read, “Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will listen to their cries and comfort.”
Warren’s e-mail about his daughter-in-law ended with an entry Friday.
“Please pray that Jaime will have a full recovery, with no long-term complications,” he wrote.
The pastor with a penchant for wearing Hawaiian shirts was not at his familiar spot at the pulpit Sunday to preach.
Warren’s best-seller, “The Purpose Driven Life,” is a self-described manifesto for Christian living in the 21st century.
He recently hosted a forum for presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain and was the subject of a Time magazine cover story for his global effects to battle poverty and other social ills.
